Your favorite Video game Characters

Postby IceCatraz » Fri Apr 01, 2011 7:57 pm

Here's a fun one: Who are your favorite video game characters? Let's say you had to pick 5. Who would you pick? State the characters name, the game they appeared in, and why you like the character. I'm still debating my list, so I'll edit it in, but without a doubt, my number one character is listed.

1. Din - Oracle of Seasons
--Literally my favorite fictional character of all time. I love everything about her - from her appearance right down to her actual power - the ability to control the seasons. It makes Storm's powers look minute - she just doesn't change the temperature, or the weather - she literally changes the seasons. That has to be the coolest power, ever, in my opinion. The many factors that it includes is just...awesome.

[01] Bowser - Mario Series - Hilarious one-liners and knows a sweet piece of ass when he sees one.

[02] Ganon / Ganondorf - Zelda Series - Epic scowl and hates boys in tight pants.

[03] Sephiroth - Final Fantasy VII - Mad attack and magic skillz and looks like he about ta freak out and start eating people at any moment.

[04] Kefka - Final Fantasy VI - Awesome, original getup and a real evil genius. My current master *bows*.

[05] Magus - Chrono Trigger - Uses a scythe and would look sick as a DragonBall character.

I've been asked this question before but I can only come up with 1.

Xehanort - Kingdom Hearts series
If you've played this series and thoroughly understand it, you'll see why he's an absolutely brilliant character. I can't really explain why he's awesome unless I spoil the story for those who haven't played. Although his personality and character aren't elaborated much, if at all, in the series he still has an interesting back story.

[SPOILERS] Basically the story starts with this Guy#1. Guy#1 gets his body possessed by Guy#2. However, Guy#1 fights back for his body and now they're at a stalemate. Both of their hearts are in Guy#1's body. This resulted in Guy#1's body forgetting everything it knew therefore becoming it's own person, Xehanort. Xehanort tehcnically has no heart of his own (hence the anagram of his name spelling "No Heart" if you take out the X, though the x has it's own meaning), just the two hearts in his body that are fighting over dominance. Well Xehanort lusts for knowledge and power. He conducts experiments and extracts darkness from people's hearts which then turn into beings known as "Heartless". He studies these heartless more and finds out they simply seek out to eat hearts. Eventually he learns in order to leave his world (in a quest for knowledge) and control the Heartless, he would need to except the darkness (being that darkness resides in the heart of the world and entering the darkness in the heart of the world would lead him to to other worlds). So he does, which results in his body splitting into two people. His heart (or rather Guy#2 or Guy#1's heart) is overtaken by darkness thus resulting in his body and soul becoming it's own person. The two forms are called a Heartless and a Nobody. Normally, Heartless and Nobody are mindless drones that act on instinct however Xehanort is able to retain his humanoid forms. The two creatures are the same being that they come from the same person yet they are different since they act as two completely separate people.[/SPOILERS]

That's only scratching the surface but I don't wanna write a whole monologue here. No I don't expect anyone to actually read that. This would be easier with anime characters :P

Well, we can do an anime one, but that'd go in The Lounge, no? Feel free to make the topic :)

@Boss Save: I see you like the big baddies, huh? And you picked all of the big ones, too - If I had to name gaming's "Top Ten Video Game Villains", all 5 would appear on that list :P. But they are all pretty cool - I know very little about Kefka and Sephiroth, as I haven't played their respective titles, but I have seen a lot of their fighting skills and overall character. Pretty bad dudes.

@Windstar: I've only played Chain of Memories and the first DS title, so I'm not really well versed in that specific character. He's the leader, right? A lot of the characters in the Kingdom Hearts games are pretty complex (when compared to your average video game character, anyway), so they always confused me :/

I have a hard time sorting through my other favorites. I have a lot of characters that I really like, like Link, Raidou Kuzunoha, Armor King, KOS-MOS, etc, but it's hard to put them into a comprehensive list and be completely accurate for me. I just know that Din is definitely at the top. But then again, I suppose "favorite" really means one, right?

1: Mario: What can I say? He's gaming's lead man; going boldly where no other characters dare to. While his games differ wildly in quality it's hard to argue that he isn't afraid to try new things. His two-dimensional nature may be a detriment to many, but that only allows me simple joy in a gaming world that's become very complex. My affair with gaming started because of him and I will never forget all of the amazing times his games have given me.

2: Samus: Pre-Other M, of course. Before that trainwreck sidelined her she was the most powerful female in gaming, unrelenting and beautiful without overtly flaunting it, doing better what her descendants would later try to do, such as Lara Croft.

3: JC Denton: While ol' JC may not have been the most developed character himself, his gameplay opened me to a world where CHOICE mattered. At the time this concept was utterly alien, but Denton and the world of Deus Ex eased me in like no other game could.

4: Planescape: Torment's entire cast: Dark and interlaced unlike any other game, each character is truly something amazing.

5: Link: Zelda's gateway character. Exceedingly simple on his own, it's the universe of characters that attract to him that make him strong and without the quiet elf in place, none of the magic would happen. As ingratiated a player-experience character can be.

6: James Sunderland: Silent Hill 2's hero, his mindset allows to see spectacular horrors throughout and his bizarre nonlinear development is awesome.

7: Durandal: Yes, I have a thing for mad AIs, but I give Marathon's Durandal the edge in this engagement. His banter is witty and helpful, and the scope of his plans are more immediately far-reaching than SHODAN's.

8: The Arbiter: Halo's best developed and most tortured character, he represents a side of the story Bungie had the balls to expose. His character reflects well on the species he represents in the fiction.

9: HK-47: Misanthropic droid from Star Wars: KOTOR, but charmingly human at times. A great representative of BioWare's writing strengths.

10: Frog: From Chrono Trigger. Whilst a tad generic, his heroic overtones and tragic curse were among the earliest I encountered and he became one of my favorite RPG characters in my youth.

11: Eddie Riggs and Ophelia: Though Brutal Legend isn't everyone's favorite game, Eddie Riggs was great, with a fascinating backstory, well-written lines and Jack Black as his voice. Ophelia acts as a perfect counterpart and love interest as a more forward character with a dark bloodline. Jennifer Hale played her role perfectly.

12: Harold: Harold represents the entirety of the Fallout series: mutated, hilarious, dark and very weird. It's hard not to get behind such a character, despite his failing mind and mutated appearance.

13: Abe: Oddworld's mascot character, simple and chipper despite his people's awful state.

14: SHODAN: Evil and freaky AI from System Shock 2 that doesn't take anything from any fleshy human or other organic.

15: Pac-Man: Among the earliest of actual video-game characters, Pac-Man set up the earliest basis of Mario's first innovation: three part storytelling in games.

16: Wario: Mario's greedy, manipulative and ultra-strong counterpart, his golden days were some of the finest available in portable gaming. I still hope for a return to form for fatso in yellow.

17: Guybrush Threepwood: Hilarious Monkey Island character from the golden days of adventure titles. Insult-based combat? Yes please.

18: GLaDOS: Portal's villainous AI is the first of several machines on my list and the youngest of them all, but she deserves her place. Her twisted nature is unnerving, comforting and hilarious. Portal wouldn't be the same without her.

19: Andrew Ryan: Wholly idealistic despite his vast intelligence, his mind powered the rise and fall of Rapture. While I often felt BioShock was a disappointment on the gameplay level, Ryan and Rapture were beautifully depicted.

20: Susano: Okami's best and earliest example of deft character development. What is truly remarkable about this character's rise from fearfulness to heroism is that you're in direct control of his "power" right until he actually gains it himself. Subtle and powerful when it actually plays out.

21: Duke Nukem: Machismo-laced, offensive and womanizing, he's a bit like Travis Touchdown. However, unlike Mr. Touchdown, Duke is the king of his own world, the best of the best. Greatest ego-boosting character ever.

22: HUNK: Resident Evil's staple secret character. His name stands for Human Unit Never Killed, and his other name is Mr. Death. As is said during one of RE3's endings: "THE DEATH CANNOT DIE."

23: Wrex: Mass Effect's brutish, yet honorable Krogan. He is far older than the rest of the cast and acts as a violent backbone to any party willing to use him. His past is tragic, his future bleak, yet even in ME2 he remains steadfast in his goal to unite his people.

24: Travis Touchdown: A brash, immature douche of an otaku with a cool get-up and a cool sword from No More Heroes. His main goal in the first game is violence and getting it on. To me, he's a microcosm for the dudebros of the gaming populace, except cooler. And funnier.

25: Nemesis: One of the most intimidating hunters of would-be horror survivalists in gaming. Resident Evil 3.

Hard for me to organize them on this scale, but that's a rough list of those on my mind most of the time.

1. Naked Snake/Big Boss: honestly, if you've played through MGS3 and the image below doesn't make you tear up a bit, you have no soul.
Image

2. A bunch of people from a series of Black Isle and Bioware games: see Exigent's list above for a few. Just too many to actually list, but games like Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age, NWN, KOTOR, Jade Empire, Mass Effect etc. each have a number of fascinating characters that you just enjoy being around. Everbody has their own particular and intrincate philosophy, and you just won't mind hearing them explain it. Fantastic.

3. Robo and Frog from Chrono Trigger: it's a strange thing to feel that the most heroic and human characters in this game are a robot a, well, frog. But if you've played through it, you know what I'm talking about.

4. John Marston from Red Dead Redemption: the Rockstar character with the best devlopment and motivation. Originally an outlaw, John abandoned the life of reckless violence and crime and settled down, forming a family and living an honest, peaceful life. When he is thrust back into the world of murder and theft, he acts only in the interest of protecting that family and the peace he believes he has earned. Unfortunately, outrunning your past is not that simple, and RDR has one of the most tragic character arcs ever. Niko Bellic from GTAIV also comes very close.

5. Delita Hiral from Final Fantasy Tactics: born in poverty, Delita works his way up to become the king of Ivalice and a war hero through clever manipulation of all the sides involved in a conflict, while using the protagonist Ramza to do most of his hard work for him.

Just a few, off the top of my head.
