Future of the Game Boy unclear?
January 21st, 2008 Posted in GBA, Rumors, Written by ValayEveryone knows how amazingly successful the DS Lite has become. The system has transformed into a bulky, dull system, to a sleek and popular one. Considering this, it is not ludicrous to question the future of the Game Boy.
Nintendo recently provided a survey to a few select people, and asked mainly about the Game Boy/GBA SP (the DS was mentioned in a few questions), with questions such as, on a scale from 1-7, how outdated the consumer feels the Game Boy is. Nintendo has conducted many of these surveys before, so it isn’t anything new. However, never before has Nintendo asked such questions about their systems. Generally, surveys have been focused on specific games.
Even if the Game Boy were to die out, it wouldn’t be a terrible thing. Perhaps Nintendo could even integrate the Game Boy and their future handheld (DS Lite 2?) in some way. For now, however, I would take this survey with a grain of salt. Nothing is concrete at this time. After all, maybe Nintendo wishes to find out ways to improve the Game Boy from a consumer standpoint.

I think the DS is better than the GB!!

GB will live!!!
DS has paved its everyone play routine.
GB is for the classic fans.
Besides, Metroid on a new GB is just…GB is that awesome.

Thats interesting.
The DS will overshadow the GBA to its inevitable death.

IF THE RESPONSES TO THIS SURVEY IN ANY WAY HELP NINTENDOS DECISION TO RELEASE MOTHER 3, THEN YOU MUST ANSWER THAT THE GBA IS STILL VERY MUCH FUN AND OR PORTABLE AND SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD ACTIVELY PURCHASE TITLES FOR.
Seriously though, with the upcoming release of Brawl, the fan translation, the petitions… Nintendo must be putting at least a small amount of thought into still releasing this title. Obviously a survey like this would give them a better idea of how well a Gameboy Advance title would do in the current market.
I’m really hoping they get some positive feedback on this. Especially seeing as though I still play my GB Micro as much as my DS right now (just finishing off FF6 Advance, and then onto Yggdra Union.)

DS>GB
DS is the fist hand held I can’t put down.

I certainly hope that the GB-franchise will live on. What the boys in Japan must do is to make a whole new handheld console that will be equal to comparison to their nemesis PSP (incl. Sound, graphics etc etc) of course leaving their fully blooming DS-franchise on markets too. Two strong against one not so strong would guarantee a top-spot in sales though…

It looks like Nintendo is pondering if they can leave out GBA compatibility from the next DS incarnation in order to increase their profits.

Well, i only use my GBA to play GBC/GB games so I wouldn’t really mind if GB would “die out”.

Yay, bury the old GBA to the bottom of the ocean floor!

I still play Final Fantasy Tactics Advance EVERY DAY on my GBA-Micro (its in my pocket right now) I love the portability of the Micro, and I doubt i’ll ever stop playing GBA games on it…
I also own a DS, and a PSP, both of which I play on a regular basis!

Even if the Game Boy IS dead, every DS owner has a GBA because the DS plays GBA games. The fact that nobody plays on the GBA handheld itself anymore isn’t really a reason to discontinue making GBA games. The cost of manufacturing GBA carts, however, is a pretty good reason.

Very good points @ Mike. For a future portable, such as a DS Lite 2, it would be nice if Nintendo incorporated full Game Boy compatibility (Game Boy, Game Boy Color, multiplayer GBA) somehow.

I want to play GBA games by my DS, but here, in Finland you can’t find GBA games from stores anymore. If you find some, games costs about 50 euros per game! And I haven’t played many GBA games by far, because I couldn’t offer GBA, cos I was waiting for GC!
But GBA won’t die! I have so many games to play!
And maybe this is a good idea. I bet that Nintendo’s next totally new handheld console will incule a Virtual Console like Wii, but for handheld games. Remember me when Nintendo reveals that!

The GBA should not be considered outdated until Mother 3 receives an official translation.

The GBA will live on… i never really liked the DS anyway. Its cool if the keep the DS so long as the GBA stays kickin!!! I think they should revamp the Game boy but not get rid of it. It would be awesome if the Game boy had sweet graphics!

I don’t think they should trash the GBs. I used to have one (sp). I was really awsome, but i have a ds now. They should make somekind of an improved GB in the future. Like one thats more like a…psp with all of that music player stuff, video playback. But keep the GBA Sp style…
