Miyamoto: Casual gamers will graduate and become hardcore

November 20th, 2008 Posted in General Nintendo, News, Written by Valay

Shigeru Miyamoto has explained in the latest issue of the Official Nintendo Magazine that those who plays titles such as Brain Age will eventually move on to more hardcore titles. Miyamoto uses his wife as an example, noting that she was initially interested in Brain Age, but has now moved on to Dr. Mario.

“I think it’s a natural transition. Everyone starts off as a light user but at some point many of them become hardcore gamers. My wife bought Brain Training about three years ago. In More Brain Training, you know how there is the Dr. Mario game? She became absolutely hooked and today she is much better than I am!”

Miyamoto also commented on the ongoing discussions between the distinctions of hardcore and casual gamers/games.

“When I hear that kind of discussion, I wonder if there really is such a distinction. There are many hardcore gamers playing with casual games and I believe casual gamers do get into hardcore Nintendo games too. I think one of Nintendo’s missions is to destroy the barrier between the two and I believe Wii Music contributes that.”

Well there are also those who’ve been hardcore players from the start and just enjoy playing classic games from the past!

Hence all I ever play is my favorite Zelda and Mario ever so often when I get bored! I usually move on to Pokemon if I haven’t play it in a while… maybe try a VC game I missed playing since I first got it!

And from that; usually you move on to casual games like Wii Sports, Wii Music, Wii Fit, Endless Ocean… and so on!

And same with what Miyamoto said; (from Brain Age to Dr. Mario)…

It’s just a never ending cycle us gameers these days should be used to by now!!!

Yet those who whine about casual games flooding the market need to STILL SHUT UP… and WAIT for those WELL PERFECT hardcore games that are still being in development!!!
Need I say more?! OR SHOULD I GLOAT AND FLOOD THE COMMENTS SECTION WITH MY ANGRY COMMENTS?!!!!!!! :(

I definetly agree with Miyamoto and JoshZTP2. When I first fell in love with games, I pretty much sucked at all the hardcore stuff. My friend used to beat me at everything. Then I got a game that really tested out my coordination on buttons and control, and now I beat my friend at everything! Since I’m a huge Nintendo fan, I also believe that all the hardcore players complaining that Nintendo has nothing but casual games at the moment, is a huge pile of crap. For those people out there, here’s a little thing called the FUTURE and in the FUTURE Nintendo will release all the fun and challenging games you could handle! Nintendo is smart because theyre TAKING THEIR TIME on making the games so they will bring the best for all the hardcore players! DUH!

Yeah, it took them long enough to admit it. It will probably take even longer for more decent hard core games to come our for a Pretendo console too. There was a clamor for hard core games and Pretendo comes out with a turd like Manhunt 2. Pretendo effectively sandbagged hard core on the wii, and then flatly decides the wii should not have hard core games or gets Lil’ Reggie to spew garbage like Animal Crossing Wii is what the hard core gamer really wants.
Pretendo really wants to milk things out, since Rockstar was only allowed to develope for the DS. That is a move of desperation. Its like, they are thinking, we cant do something like this first party so we have to have it done on our ailing old ass system. If you make us butt loads of money, then you can develop for our real cash cow. They totally screwed the consumer there, this is what your loyalty to Pretendo gets you sheep!

I have nothing against that that idea, as it’s true that the casual gamers of today may well be tomorrow’s hardcore.

However, I must say that Nintendo can not abandon the current generation of hardcore gamers in order to “prepare” a new one.

The Wii does have a decent number of hardcore titles in it, yet it pales in comparison to other next-gen consoles, especially in the RPG department. It also concerns me that Nintendo has started a policy of porting old Gamecube games for the hardcore instead of focusing on the creation of new ideas and concepts for Wii-exclusive titles.

Out of respect you should really start posting source links.

  9. By Valay on Nov 21, 2008

@ Justin – In general, stories that aren’t news tips (this is an actual excerpt from the magazine, as was indicated in the news article, thus there is no link source) or original content/findings have source links to them.

Or, unless I make a careless error and forget to include a source link. But, I typically try to include source links where it’s appropriate.

Casuals should be rounded up and be leaded into a furnace.

JoshZTP2, ur a dumb ass! This is not a “transition”, nor is it natural. You either like casual games, or hardcore games. Learn
