Capcom discusses Darkside Chronicles sales, hardcore games, Monster Hunter 3, and more

January 5th, 2010 Posted in DS, News, Wii, Written by Valay

Because a translation from Google is being used, not everything is perfectly clear. However, this is well worth reading, as Antoine Seux from Capcom France divulges a bunch of information concerning Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, Monster Hunter 3, hardcore games, the DS, and more.

Capcom on Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles sales…

“As for Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, in absolute figures are not too bad, but it’s not going to lie, they are below what we hoped. After three weeks (the interview was conducted December 23, editor’s note), we are a total of 16,000 units sold. One feels that there is a problem very clear on this style of game on the Wii, where gamers are obviously moved on. There are two more years, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles had yet had a very very big success on Wii. Here we can see, the customer of this console has turned to something much broader audience. It is a disappointment.”

Capcom comparing sales of Darkside Chronicles to Resident Evil 4…

“Resident Evil 4 on Wii had worked well, but he was released in June 2007, when the market had nothing to do! This year the Wii was very difficult with an oversupply, and a gamer market that has radically changed. We note that the games called “gamers” are selling less and less on the Nintendo console, whether MadWorld, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop, The House of the Dead: Overkill … scores were not extraordinary. Compared to 140,000 pieces sold Resident Evil 4 on Wii at the time, it is very far away. There is clearly a concern to this level.”

Capcom discussing whether hardcore games won’t have as much support in 2010…

“Indeed, the Wii is becoming complex. What works great, and I rely on the GfK figures, the games are very heavily very public, like Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, New Super Mario Bros.. Wii and to a lesser extent Just Dance and The Rabbids. These securities are strongly supported, and I insist on it, by massive advertising campaigns.”

Capcom on the lack of support from retailers in France regarding Darkside Chronicles…

“Unfortunately, this is a game rated 18 +. The advertising campaign was not visible at peak times by the general public, and that’s what counts at this time of year. A campaign for Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles could not have taken place before 22h30/23h, and it is indeed very far from the target “classic” of the Wii today. Two years ago, there were still gamers on Wii, Nintendo loyalists who – prior – were diverted from this console in favor of the new generation.”

Capcom’s opinion of 2009…

“This is the year of the emergence of so-called new console generation. It feels a position clear of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the market. This does not necessarily feel in the figures, because the Wii is still an important part of sales, but growth is on both platforms. The DS is declining, for reasons various and varied as market saturation and piracy. For these same reasons, the PSP is dying. The Wii console is very much a family commitment rates relatively low. So for us, Capcom, the future is the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.”

Why Capcom doesn’t support the DS better in France…

“Capcom has never been strong on DS. Our expertise is fully expressed on consoles, that is to say games in the third person, action games, a great atmosphere, a style to them that are not replicable on DS . Monster Hunter is a game whose biggest scores historically have made the PSP. Therefore, our historical successes were always made on specific developments. After that, we still present on the DS via Ace Attorney (Gyakuten Saiban), Mega Man – licenses that have a little trouble in Europe. There was no question of going Capcom for “ruining” his mark by trying to make the development at any cost.”

Capcom on the launch of Monster Hunter 3 in Europe…

“Monster Hunter has always performed reasonably well in Europe on PSP, even if it is light years ahead scores in Japan. There is a very strong desire for Capcom to make a permanent license in the West. Since it is a title that lends itself to multiplayer gaming, the Wii is adapted. It is, moreover, a title that can easily pass from the universe “gamer” to the general public. So yes, our ambitions are very high, but we’re still in the estimates. It’s hard to give you a precise figure, given the high elasticity of sales with marketing campaigns for the Wii.”

Capcom on 2010, noting that this year will be difficult for the DS…

“This will be a difficult year for the handheld in general, DS or PSP. We should see the rise of the PS3 and Xbox 360, with, hopefully, expansion of game styles, open to a wider audience. Even if it does not Capcom, is in the interests of this sector as new generation consoles seduce new audiences. This will allow a demonization of the recreation. In 2010, the video game software will return to growth in sales as higher installed base for PS3 and 360 will lifecycles longer for games, with price declines.”

    Jesus F. Christ

Cant this guy just be honest and say

“Yeah, its an on rails game. Of course it wouldnt sell again! People bought Umbrella Chronicles, got disapointed and never want to see a on rails game again. We made a bet, but consumers are smart”

Just mark this words: Red Steel 2 is coming, and its going to HUMILIATE Capcom, EA, Actvision.

    We all do, bob.

But im watching the all the old lazy-approach-sure-shot-profit-on-wii games failing…

Consumers arent taking sh!t no more. If its a lazy, boring, stupid game, we´re not buying.

And darkside chronicles, for the love of God, its an awful videogame. An awful videogame that came in the worst time possible, when everybody is neck deep in On Rails games. And sick of em.

Red Steel 2 just GOT to be better than all this.

with all the rail shooters that companies like sega and capcom are releasing its no wonder why people are getting fed up and going to the xbox 360 and ps3.then these developers have the nerve to say their is no hardcore gamers on the wii. hello ! how about you guys actually put a little more effort into your work and release more traditional games like resident evil(not on rails) and street fighter 4. the wii is not the most powerful hardware but a decent game can still be done. put it this way its no less powerful than a ps2 original xbox or gamecube and look at all the fantastic games that were put on those systems. oh well; i guess well have to be content with another dozen or so wii fit games, to bad…

I see a pattern here with Capcom,Sega and EA. Developers are making some silly decison choices particularly with short gameplay length which makes it ideal for those games to be rented rather than purchased.

Publishers are failing because some of their games didn’t receive enough marketing effort.

A part of the other problem naturally falls on the Wii audience for failing to support some of the better games like RE:Dark Side Chronicles, Dead Space and Mad World. I mean, the Wii’s userbase is over 55 million and its quite sad and pathetic to see good games like these bomb so badly.

    Capcom

    – No one gave a rat’s behind about Spyborgs because the game was mediocre brawler. On top of it, the marketing for the game was pretty weak.

Personally, I love Resident Evil: The Dark Side Chronicles. However, Capcom needs to understand that Wii owners were once again quite disappointed by the announcement of this game being yet another on-rails FPS. The game was fairly well promoted.

    Sega

HOTD: Overkill – A mediocre game that’s way too short. Decent marketing effort.

MadWorld – good game but one that’s way too short with little to no replay value. Decent marketing effort.

The Conduit had the most hype and marketing behind it thanks to the High Voltage Software’s promotion of the game. Unfortunatelt, its a mediocre game that failed to live up to the hype.

    EA

Dead Space: Extraction’s another good on-rails FPS. However, it has little to no replay value. In addition, EA should be ashamed of itself for failing to lift a finger to promote this game. Just watch, they’ll naturally promote the hell out of Dead Space 2.

Im just hoping that these things dont kill the next nintendo system. If this keeps up, the next nintendo will be nothing but a kids system where also the parents can exercise with it. Best seller would be “Super Wii Fit” Featuring mario, who cheers you on by saying, Letsa Go!

Maybe this years games will sell so well, that other developers will realize they cant just make rail shooters or beat em up games and expect 1 out of 3 wii owners to buy them.

They need to stop moaning, Darkside Chronicles no matter how good it is its still A ON RAILS GAME AND THAT SUCKS!! give us a real resident veil game and see if it will sell or not? also stop making damn ports if you want your games to fricken sell! Monster Hunter has already of to a great start because its A GOOD AND NEW GAME!

I think Antoine Seux from Capcom France should wake up and smell the coffee….if it is a bad game (rated a 6 by IGN) it is not going to fly off the shelves, wether it’s on a Wii or Xbox 360 or PS3…..I think that if your going to take the sales of a bad game personnally you shouldn’t be in the business! I know a lot of people waiting for the Capcom VS Tatsunoko….including me…why….because it’s a good game!

you know they are worng but at come point im with them, you see, they are soooo wrong because who wants to get a on rails shoter i bet if the game was a remake of the resident evil 2 with the engine of the re4 the game would sold as much as MW2, but im happy that campcom is saying this, because that says more that the wii needs wii HD power graphics you know, nintendo said, “our gamers are fine with SD, theres no need of upgrading wii to HD” because we are so happy with it, dont get me wrong, i have buyed the wii 2 times, and mario galaxy yeah it is the best, but those games would be just awsome in HD.
