Dunaway points to lack of advertising for disappointing Chinatown Wars sales

December 10th, 2009 Posted in DS, News, Written by Valay

The poor sales of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the DS has been well chronicled. In spite of receiving critical acclaim, the title pretty much bombed in its opening month in the United States. Nintendo said that the sales of Chinatown Wars would grow over time, but it doesn’t look like the game has been selling a whole lot more since April. But in a recent interview, Nintendo’s Cammie Dunaway discussed the poor sales of the game and noted that heavier and long-term advertising should have been in place.

I also bought it, but announcing a few montha after release your porting it to the PSP was the worst decision they made. They basically killed all future Ds sales and burned the ones that bought it. PSP had its own games and DS should of to. But now you can get this game as well as all the others on PSP. And better market awareness would have been nice. They relied on word of mouth and internet reviews !

I will paste the same comments I made on N4g:

LCS and VCS did well because they are fully 3D. CHW won’t sell well on the PSP because it has a different perspective (camera).

If CHW bombed on the PSP, why can’t it bomb on the DS? People don’t like this perspective and that’s all.
The DS version will probably give a profit but I can’t say the same thing for the PSP version:
    -DS version

    -PSP version:

The problem isn’t the DS, people want a GTA like Liberty City Stories now.

If CHW sold much better on the DS (comparing the same game and not CHW DS x LCS), what makes you think that a fully 3D GTA like LCS can’t sell better on the DS?

Why can’t the DS owners disapprove this perspective just like the PSP owners did?

Sorry but there is no excuse, the problem is the perspective, it’s not like LCS. The DS CAN (not impossible) sell LCS much better than the PSP just like it did with CHW but we don’t know because there is no GTA fully 3D like LCS on the DS.
