Aonuma: Topping Ocarina of Time will be “quite complicated”

November 23rd, 2009 Posted in General Nintendo, News, Written by Valay

In the past, Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma has always discussed The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and has noted that no game has managed to surpass it. Last year, he told Nintendo Power that he will not quit working on the series until he accomplishes that goal. In an interview with Spanish magazine El Mundo, Aonuma once again commented on the challenge of topping the classic N64 classic and said that it will be “quite complicated.”

“Surpassing it is very complicated. In addition, the things of the past pass on to our memories and there they grow bigger. Now if you play Ocarina of Time, you realize that it is not such a good game. There are times when it does not move quickly, the graphics are not as nice as they should be, there are parts that are somewhat confusing…Now, other Zelda games are technically superior. Everything is much faster, much better…But to overcome Ocarina of Time, what is needed is a change comparable to what occurred back then. And that’s something that is quite complicated.”

Look mr Aonomura or Numaoua,Ocarina of time is a perfect game, and i mean a p-e-r-f-e-c-t game!!But you didn’t have the chance to play this game when it launch, maybe you played something else but ok,your problem!!The thing that make this game No1 in my mind and my heart is that the line of time it was in front of you!!!In the beggining you are a kid and in kakariko village some houses wasn’t finished and when you grown up the houses are finished and many many other things!!You were present on the the evolution!!The thilight princess was a beautifull game but not SUPERIOR LIKE OCARINA OF TIME.Were is this evolution on thilight?Nowhere!!And this is the reasson that everubody speaking still about ocarina and not about thilight…And its not because i tell it,every person on this dead planet that had played this game say it.. I am sorry about my speach, but my eyes have tired on reading these… I am a console collector and i can see the evolution and the evolution on this game have stop on ocarina…

I disagree with the above comment. Ocarina of Time was a fantastic game, quite possibly one of the best I’d played up until that point, but it has aged badly. A Link to the Past, on the other hand, still sounds, looks and plays great.

well im going to have to disagree with both of you, Ocarina of time in now were close to Majora’s mask…thats a game boy!!! anyways the best zelda game is wind waker, EVERYTHING about that game is perfect, Twilight is in dead last for my zelda love, beautiful game..buts thats it

And I disagree with you lol of all the Zeldas I can’t stand MM, the 3 day thing annoyed me so much, a Link to the Past was by far a groundbreaking title introducing the the Dark World and Ocarina introduced time changing before your eyes.WW was all about exploration and TP was really all about realism with the graphics.

I’ve always thought OoT wasn’t really the greatest game of all time, (although it was good) I think it’s mostly the nostalgia and the fact that 3D was new and exiting when it came out.

i have to agree with Anders on this one. Ocarina Of Time was a TRULY epic game for it’s time but it hasn’t aged very well. now a link to the past? once again i have to agree, that game has aged VERY well. it’s still a blast to play. but still do enjoy playing OoT.

Wind Waker is my fav, and I agree on OOT aging a little badly (still very playable though), as do a lot of N64 games.

SNES games, on the other hand, hold up much better.

I dsagree with Captain N, the three day mechanic in MM was great and I didnt find it annoying at all, then again I was good at the game…..

id like to see a zelda title on wiiware made a rebirth link to the past just saying :) .

Topping Ocarina of Time? What about topping Wind Waker?

  12. By opiumx on Nov 23, 2009

OOT is one of the best games ever made, deserves a top 5 spot in any list. I went back to play the original on my old n64, and I didnt like it at all. The virtual console one looks drastically better IMO.

I was surprised at wind waker, it was awesome despite the cartoony look (after a hour or less it gets charming really). Just talking about it Im gonna play it again heh.

Wind Waker was probably one of the most controverisal video games of all time, simply because of the cel-shading. Personally, I kinda like it, just so long as they ALSO make Twilight-style zelda games. Besides that, WW was really fun to play!

But anyway, yeah I think OoT was spectacular FOR ITS TIME. It’s praise today stems mostly from nostalgia (although it IS still a great game). But if it were to be released today, it probably wouldn’t get good reviews. But for an era when 3-D gaming was new, OoT was incredible.

wow, so much drama lol. hhmmnn, im not really sure wht to say tho. i kinda agree with the article when aounuma says the series needs (and here’s the key folks) ‘a change comparable to wht ocurred back then’. remember wht IT WAS tht actually ocurred back then. zelda 64 took scaling in video games to a new high with its massive open world, underwater temples, innovative music, time travelling, the now must-have Ztargeting or lock on as its called now, horseback riding-archery, and underwater hacking and slashing (b4 mh3 made it cool). face it fanboys, all tht seems all to common now. but back then we were lucky to have our dreams come true. ZELDA64 was the game we always wanted. till next time make mine nintendo.

I’m just glad that each Zelda title has been an A+ release. Each has it’s own strengths :)

I think all you are nuts; all you guys are silly fanboys who can’t contain the teaseing of the next Zelda for Wii in 2010! :P

Of course Ocarina can’t be surpased in our minds or memories; but as much as Nintendo tries & tries they still make awesome Zelda games no matter what! And everyone is entitled to having their favorite Zelda game; even if it was an awesome game released after Ocarina!

Be it Majora’s Mask, Wind Waker, or Twilight Princess… each have their own unique stories & are just as dark or light in shade to the series! That’s what I love about all of them; & honestly Twilight Princess is my #1 favorite because it has that Lord of the Rings epicness to the series because of the fantastic way it looks! And of course the only reason why we all love Ocarina is because it’s a more stunning visual experience than A Link to the Past; even if the stories are pitch perfect & almost exactly the same! ;)

My only concern though is wondering what the story is going to be like for the next Zelda on the Wii; be it 2010 when it’s announced at E3! So I know I say this for the sake of all the Zelda fanboys; “we have better be blown away with a Zelda Wii trailer at next E3… be it if it has dark & awesome visuals & gameplay that is either like the Zelda formula we always love or it something new & unexpected for us to enjoy on a whole new level”! :)

So the only thing I’ll be least likely worried about; is if the next Zelda Wii 2010 game clones anything remotely simular to a 360 game like Oblivian! I know you stupid fan boys would love that; but I hate the 360 & any of their games with a passion! Plus I would kind of like a first person view look on a next Zelda; but I’ll be turned off it highly happens! :P

And hey; you don’t want to get me started on what kind of loyal Nintendo fan I am! :P

I’m just happen to appreciate anything hardcore Nintendo; even though I don’t follow the term & think it’s highly over rated! ;)

I like all Zeldas: Majors’s Mask, Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, Link to the Past, Four Swords Adventure. They’re all good games, but the games that stand out are Majora’s Mask and Wind Waker. Both of them did something very different, and they were all the better for it. While OoT was and is a good game (I played LttP, WW, and TP before I played OoT), it’s not the best. It is one of the best games that I’ve played, but I think that MM and WW are better.
