This list has Final Fantasy X so it loses all credibility right there…
By Sanzee on Nov 22, 2009
At the beginning of GI’s last issue, the special 200th issue, Andy (the editor-in-cheif) made a statement about how gamers would argue over the list they made. It’s true. Unfortunately, people don’t agree on anything when it comes to gaming. Why? Because of preference. You may not have enjoyed Final Fantasy X, but on a technical level, let’s just say for arguments sake that it’s a great game. In terms of how good the game, minus dumb-ass opinions, the game is actually pretty good. I don’t like the game personally, but I can still admit that it should make the list. I agree with Game Informer’s top 200 games, as it clearly was devised based on technical and moral aspects of all the games of the last 30 years. It has nothing to do with opinion, it’s all based on cultural impact and technical specifications, and for that I think Game Informer’s list is near-perfect.
By Sam on Nov 22, 2009
Good list, but certain games are given stature for reasons that others are not. Example, WoW ranks in at 11 because of its widespread impact on the way video games can be marketed, but a game like NFL 2k5 barely makes the list when it is the sole reason EA spent an insane amount of money on an exclusive license to the NFL.
Obviously a list like this can’t be perfect, but this was a good attempt.
By Lazyeye79 on Nov 22, 2009
an ok list but could have been much better. very much better
By Angel on Nov 22, 2009
List was made very incorrectly. I disagree with alot of the positions. MGS3 is WAAAAY better than MGS2 (as an example).
By DylanMMc on Nov 22, 2009
98. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS3/360, 2009)
huh?
By DylanMMc on Nov 22, 2009
Uncharted 2? My apologies if i missed it.
By Sanzee on Nov 22, 2009
Yes Dylan, I’m glad you apologized because uncharted 2 is on here. #56… two in front of my favorite game of all time. Despite the fact that it’s MY favorite game of all time, I’m not going to complain and say it should be number 1 just because I LIKE IT. Not that you are, but many of these young 15 year old boys with PlayStation 3’s seem to do that alot.
By Gamer4life on Nov 22, 2009
List is ok in terms of games on it, but the order is way off. MGS 2 is widely considered the weakest of the series and 4 is probably the best, though i understand puting the orginal in front of it. Also COD4 is wayyyyy to high and this is comming from someone who almost had a medical addiction to the game
By Gamer4life on Nov 22, 2009
oh and Mike tyson’s punch out #16 … that better be some kind of a joke
By Usagi on Nov 22, 2009
FE Borderlands (one-season game) above Wolfenstein 3D? Don’t be silly. Have seen *much* better GOAT’s lists.
By Smackos on Nov 22, 2009
Ok, I just played GTA3 for the first time last week and no matter how influential or “important” that game is meant to be, it is still pure garbage. The aiming system is THERE IS NO SYSTEM. The combat is spray and pray. The graphics are dreary. The story, VA and world is godawful.
A good game is good forever, and GTA3 is not one of these. GTA4 is waaaaaaay better, if only because it didn’t give me cancer of the eyes.
SotC and Ico not being #1 and #2 invalidate this list and any other.
By Guy on Nov 22, 2009
No Dune 2, no Syndicate, no Star Control 2?
List fails and should be ignored.
By J on Nov 22, 2009
What OOT only at 20?Are they crazy?
OOT must be in the top 5 at least!
By J on Nov 22, 2009
Also hardly any Rare games-Where is JFG,Banjo Kazooie and Conker-Better than a lot of these Games!
By Bernardo on Nov 22, 2009
Mike Tyson’s Punch out? At 16? 16?
Man, that is fucked up. Btw, no Shin Megami Tensei, what’s up with that?
By Smackos on Nov 22, 2009
No, OoT should not be in the top anything. Take it from someone who skipped it when it came out, does not want to relive the glory years of Nintendo, and has no pro-Nintendo console war bias.
The game is awful. Simply awful. Horrible blocky 3D – that whole generation is bile, but especially N64’s “gems” – shoddy controls, an unimaginative, cliche world and story, and terribly outdated gameplay. Makes me want to kick a puppy. Take off the nostalgia goggles. Link’s Awakening really was better.
By nutbear96 on Nov 22, 2009
Did you see how they didn’t include MW2? But they included MW1? Thats because MW2 is an expansion of the first MW! I have L4D1 and 2 and MW1 and 2 and and think MW1 and 2 are more closely related (meaning that they are basicaly updated in the most careless way) but L4D 2 affores loads more compared to what MW 2 does! Is it me or did I NOT see GTA:SA up there? I think they should have swapped HL2 and Doom around. And because this is a Nintendo site I’m not surprised that Zelda is at the top!
And Tetris, Lemmings, Donkey Kong and Tekken were some of the builing blocks of my childhood.
By thegingerfatone on Nov 22, 2009
nutbear, MW2 is on there, its just number 181. I don’t get why it’s so much lower than COD4. Its the same game with lots of small improvements….. How can it be worse?
And seriously, how is Bully better than MW2? and im dissapointed by no Stuntman. That was the best ps2 game ever. Nothing can beat it.
By retard on Nov 22, 2009
>30. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivious
>30
ahahahahahahahaha oh wow
By Paul W on Nov 22, 2009
No, they didn;t publish a list of the greatest 200 games of all time. They published a list of what in thier opinion are the greatest 200 games of all times or the list that thy want you to think are the greatest 200 games of all time.
It’s an absolute waste of time as a list. They know or care nothing about most of the great British games that were produced on the Amiga, Commodore 64 or Spectrum.
Is there even a single Sega game on there at all? There isn’t one by Rare! No Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, BANJO KAZOOIE, DK64, Conker’s Bad Fur Day?
This is an insult of a list written by an amateur games player.
By Paul W on Nov 22, 2009
Hold on – this list was written by a site that PUBLISHES MAGAZINES. They deserve to be sacked, they really do. Even if you forgive them (and I don’t at all, in their position) for not knowing some of the British games from the 2D era, there is no excuse for completely ignoring Sega and Rare. They don’t even rate Jet Set Radio for doing something innovative?
This list was not written by someone with a proper gaming soul. Where is the Resident Evil remake on the Gamecube? Or any of the Monkey Island games? It just reads like the most basic of basic casual gamers list. If Bioshock and Half Life 2 hadn’t been made by American studios they might not have been selected by them at all.
By Elbolo on Nov 22, 2009
Sorry, no MGS4,bad list
By David Macphail on Nov 22, 2009
Who’s the idiot that said FF X didn’t deserve to be on here??? Final Fantasy X was one of the best PS2 exclusives of all time and THE BEST FF game of all time.
Pokemon Gold/Silver should have been #1.
Assassin’s Creed, Ratchet 3, LBP, MGS4 Uncharted 2 and Jak 3 should have been higher.
By Daniel on Nov 22, 2009
wat the hell kind of a list is this!!!! just plain awful, why is modern warfare 2 181st and legend of zelda no. one!!! doesnt make sense, epecialy seein as modern warfare 1 is ahead of two and two is a million times better, aswell as about one hundred games on this crappy list!!!!!
Get gta 3 outa number three, terrible game!!!!!
and kh,wat is up wit tht, brilliant game and its so far down the list!!!!
AAAWWWWWFFFFULLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By K on Nov 22, 2009
Um…Final Fantasy X IS on there…number 43.
By Rusty on Nov 22, 2009
The lack of Sega classics like Phantasy Star, Virtua Fighter, Outrun, Streets of Rage, Shinobi and Space Harrier is truly sickening. What do these publications have against Sega? Some of these Sega classics are some of the most influential games of all time.
By the vamp on Nov 22, 2009
this list is almost completely wrong
By J on Nov 22, 2009
@Smackos
Sry Blocky graphics?
Was your TV broken in 1998?
As OOT came out it was the beginning of 3D adventures as we know it today.
As OOT came out there was no other game like it-Tomb Raider was rubbish in comparision!
There was only one other 3D game that was so influential and that was Mario 64.
Blocky graphics?-PMSL!
By Mohan on Nov 22, 2009
Good list, if I have to say so myself, even though I would rearrange a few of them.
By CrunchyNut on Nov 22, 2009
Deus Ex and Fallout 3 should be higher.
By CrunchyNut on Nov 22, 2009
BTW, Good list, can’t really complain about most of it as the top 50 are more or less classics.
By Limanima on Nov 22, 2009
Where are the big classics like Prince of Persia, Secret of Monkey Island, Wing Commander, Sim City? Some of those games seem to be on the list merely because of good grahics. What is GTA IV doing there?
This lists are just ridiculous…
By Caelum on Nov 22, 2009
Not terrible, but the lack of DS games is disturbing. From what I counted, Phoenix Wright was the only DS game on the list, and though it’s a solid title, there are still dozens of better DS games, in my opinion.
By David Macphail on Nov 22, 2009
@ K – was your comment directed at me? I’m aware that Final Fantasy X is on the list i was replying to the guy who made the first comment when he said it SHOUDLN’T be on there.
By Mark on Nov 22, 2009
It is funny how some people is complaining about games not being there when they actually are on the list. That tells you a lot about your mental retention capabilities.
By saiyangodbroly26 on Nov 22, 2009
best top of games list ive ever read
By Radioactive Puppy on Nov 22, 2009
Okay, I can agree with a lot of games here, but the fact that games released in 2009 are being hailed as a top 200 game of all time is ridiculous. It has not withstood the test of time at all nor can we be sure if it has introduced anything good to gaming yet.
However, the fact that the majority of the Zelda Games and Starcraft break above 100 is good enough for me. It’s a bit insulting that Super Smash Bros. Brawl is not up there, nor is the original Smash. Best of all, no Final Fantasy VII! (Ducks to avoid thrown shoes)
By Smackos on Nov 22, 2009
@J
Mario 64 looked awful then and it looks even worse today. Nothing can beat Uncharted 2 right now, and I think with that game, we’ve finally reached a point where we can stop being ashamed.
Were your eyes f*cked in 1998? Because every single 3D game from the PS1 generation across all consoles is a blocky mess.
OoT is a prime offender. Wtf does PMSL even mean. Get out of here nooblet.
By Person on Nov 22, 2009
Gotta disagree with quite a few on this list. It’s like they played some of these and decided to just give some low ranking nods to the games that really deserve higher spots.
Biggest problem I had:
164. X-Com: UFO Defense – How in the world is this better than Apocalypse? No one should ever, ever consider UFO Defense better than the glory that is X-Com: Apocalypse. Apocalypse is better in literally every way
By MJD on Nov 22, 2009
No Rare games except GoldenEye! No Perfect Dark, Banjo, Conker, or even Donkey King Country? You gotta be kidding me!
This list is one of the worst lists I have ever seen.
By Zayne-Tiberius on Nov 22, 2009
@ Radioactive Puppy
Final Fantasy VII –> No. 15
By opiumx on Nov 22, 2009
No “grim fandango” or “the longest journey”? Shame on them! hehe
By Radioactive Puppy on Nov 22, 2009
@Zayne-Tiberius
Damn it. That game did nothing to revolutionize gaming except it had a so-so story. But meh, that’s just me.
I mean, this list feels like they just said “What are the top 200 games we’ve ever played?” and they just started naming- which explains why there’s so many random, more modern games thrown in there.
Half of this list I can get behind IF it were just “We named the best game ever in no particular order”, so I could let Left 4 Dead being that high go. But the list needs refinement- and if you know “not everyone is going to agree with your list” and you POST YOUR MAILING ADDRESS for them so they can complain to you about it- just don’t do it. Find some more groundbreaking, 200th issue material and post it.
By Nintendo Bias on Nov 22, 2009
I seriously don’t get this list. Why are there so many dumb nes/snes games so high up!!!
tecmo super bowl/god of war1/Mike Tysons punchout/Super Mario Bros… are you really serious!!!
All those games higher than Halo:Combat Evolved. Halo kick-started the whole FPS genre on consoles (goldeneye just wasn’t big enough imo). Halo1 is a massive milestone in gaming. 39th place… ah man get real.
By NOPORCRU on Nov 22, 2009
good list wats with the hate for ffx i mean my opinion is its one of the bests but in sppecs its still a really good game

By tylor on Nov 23, 2009
sorry for the double post, but NOPORCSU, honestly, if anything Kid Icarus should be a lot higher. First, the main theme just kicks ass music wise. Second, to call it basic platforming is to expose that you never made it past level one, ’cause things change, buddy. One of the best games ever, I carry a rom of it on my DS when I travel because if the plane is going down and I’m going to die regardless, I want my last moments to be spent playing Kid Icarus.
By Ares on Nov 23, 2009
Man, those grumbling about this list are crazy. This is a great list chosen by credible critics. How many of YOU can play 200 DIFFERENT games and put them on a list in a credible order? I doubt most of you have even played 100 games let alone 200 great ones. I for one have completed most of these and they are in a decent order. The best Final Fantasy won out, the best Megaman title won out, the best Resident Evil won out, the two most inspiring games ever are the top two; basically you have to compare apples and oranges most of the way but the best in each series stands taller than its brothers. If you don’t like the list make your own but NOT a top ten list. If you can’t make a top 200 list than you are not experienced enough to share an opinion.
By Benny on Nov 23, 2009
I am quite astonished by the top two. The only reason they could be there is because they started two of gaming’s greatest franchises. In playabilty, both have been surpassed several times over by their sequels.
Or which Zelda do you think a new player would enjoy more today, Zelda or Twilight Princess? That is how a list should be made in my opinion, not based on past glory but on how fun they are to play today.

Well the PS1 had blocky graphics!
PSML is pissing myself laughing!
Mario 64 was in 1996 state of the art!OOT looked a lot better.Jan 1999 came Turok 2 out (apart from the fog) raised the bar even further.
Better graphics didn´t come until the Geforce 6 came out which had enough power to activated “anti-alasing” which minimised jaggies!
If you mean “blocky graphics” you mean “jaggies”-Thats something different-even the wii still has alasing due to lack of graphic power!
OOT was a masterpiece in 1998 and really should be Top 5 and never GTA 3 -Its crap GTA VC/San Andreas are a lot better!
By bg on Nov 23, 2009
No bullfrog games, games like UT 2004 while old UT was better… Who cares of Fallout 3, its so high because its on consoles also? There were ton better rpgs on computers and they are in fact lower or not listed…
Oblivion being 30 lol… WoW should be around 15-20. Any why, oh why new shitty games, its not popularity contest …
Syndicate, Populous, Another World, Dune II, Dungeon Keeper to name few…
By printthelegends on Nov 23, 2009
This list has no love for Sega whatsoever. Only four Genesis games (one of which was HOCKEY? Hockey over Comix Zone, Phantasy Star, Streets of Rage, etc.?) and not a single Saturn or Dreamcast game? How can one possibly justify the lack of Shenmue, NiGHTs, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Soul Calibur and countless others? Like we need yet another list telling us how great the Mario and Zelda games are…
By Meh on Nov 23, 2009
This list is just plain laughable. MW2 JUST came out hahaha. How can they take themselves seriously?
By -mw- on Nov 23, 2009
List is garbage, those who made it have no clue about games
By Evilgamer on Nov 23, 2009
Ultima Online not even in top 200 ?
Dark Age of Camelot not even in top 200 ?
World of Warcraft place 11 ?
These ppl must be retarded..
By Taro on Nov 23, 2009
Clearly the list is biased against SEGA. Shenmue doesn’t make the list and GTA III is in the top 10? Ha, not. Shenmue has the most advanced combat system of any action adventure game ever, one of the best original soundtracks for any game, a fantastic storyline, and GTA takes the cake for repetitive missions with no depth to gameplay.
By LegatoSkyheart on Nov 24, 2009
This list was good until I noticed Fallout 3 and A Link to the Past listed twice.
Not only that but the Guy even put down Final Fantasy III for the SNES. If only he knew that it was FFVI not III.
Super Mario Bros. 3 should have been the Top of the List. Shame this is broken.
By LegatoSkyheart on Nov 24, 2009
My bad. I mistaken Fallout and Link’s Awakening.
It’s still a Broken List.

I can’t believe this list, this is the saddest piece of shit I’ve ever seen. There is no way my voice could ever be heard in the end… but my suggestion is to make a list of 500 of the best games ever, and here is the kicker, NOT RANKED!!!
500 of the best games —>UNRANKED!!! NO numbers! Just lots of good games we can all agree on.
The list of games could be split by thier normal categories. This would be a truely fair list that everyone could agree on.
By Jesse S. Hall on Nov 24, 2009
anyone agree with me?
By Bigjon on Nov 26, 2009
Twilight Princess should of been in the top 20 in my opinion but to make a list of the top games of all time is just to hard because different games had different impacts on different people FF8 should of been on there somewhere
By Bigjon on Nov 26, 2009
I agree with you Jesse the list should of been named top ranked. Somebody should make a list where people vote of the favorite games
By kadzier on Nov 26, 2009
I agree totally with all the selections for the list, but NOT in the order it’s in, (MGS3 far surpasses both 2 AND 1, San Andreas FAAAR surpasses GTA3, come on now). Still I must admit, I’m impressed at how you managed to get… well, EVERYTHING that deserved it. The inclusion of NFL 2K5 alone (probably the greatest sports game for ANY sport EVER, PERIOD) proves how much care you put into the selection. Nice job.
By Rayne on Nov 26, 2009
Uhm… Where is Fahrenheit at least? o_O
By Marc on Nov 27, 2009
This list upset me. They had ALL the great games, I agree with the games on this list. But just not the order, this should be titled “In No real order”. GTAIII in the top ten of all-time? Better than Sonic? Star Fox 64? Mario Kart? I admit it was influential, a good game, but no.
By Marc on Nov 27, 2009
Oh! And yes, needs Perfect Dark for N64.
By FlangeGriefer on Nov 28, 2009
No Monkey Island, Syndicate or Elite?!? The list reads as though it was written by someone who had their first gaming experience on the N64! Pre-92 PC’s and the earlier Amiga systems had some of the greatest titles of all time.
By This guy on Nov 29, 2009
Where’s grim fandango?!
By Israel on Dec 1, 2009
This list is way off, I feel there was a bunch of kiss a** titles here, when there were clearly more obvious ones that shouldv’e taken their place.
I dont agree with Tetris being at number 3 at all. There’s a couple I coulda names like Contra or even Mike Tysons Punchout ahead of it. Miss Pacman, seriously at # 10, like who smoked crack that night and voted that. That shouldnt even be on the list. There were so many obvious names that were missed. There were no Streets of Rage named or any Donkey Kong Countries.
And Necronzero, the fact that you mentioned Final Fantasy X, and that the list fails because of it, I would have to agree. EVERYONE who’s told me about that game said that it sucked and I’ve never played it.
Here’s a few honorable mentions, not mentioned:
- ALtered Beast
- Golden Axe
- Shinobi 3
- Ducktales
- Rygar
- Goonies 2
- Excitebike
- Metal Gear (NES)
- Double Dragon 2
- Double Dribble
- WCW vs NWO (N64)
- NBA Live, when it first came out with the tilted view, so influential that game was.
- Coach K, that game was amazing ! Breaking the glass then pointing at who you dunked on. No game was like that. clearly no appreciation for sports games. This list is a travesty, and should get redone.
By ShirK on Dec 1, 2009
Where is Halo 3? One of the most played games on Xbox Live 3 years after its introduction and not even a mention?
Story: check. Coop goodness: Check. Multiplayer: Check. Extensive support and huge community. Check. How is this not one of the all-time greats?
And somehow games like Riddick get on to the list instead. Quite an epic fail there.
By Noobert on Dec 1, 2009
Hey Shirk youre a bit of a queer. Check. Come now don’t be shy. Its ok. Halo 3 is not that good. Check. Its a bit average. Check. You have no life (and probably no penis. Check.
Oh wheres TimeSplitters 2 or any of them? Arkham Asylam, why is that there? 3 words Piece-Of-Shit.MGS2 Son of Bitches? I still dont get the point of that game. All 4 3d Metal gears and only 2 Sonics! WTF!!!!
By Noobert on Dec 1, 2009
Sorry there are also about TEN mario games yes we all no mario games are good but try to be a bit selective

I am not surprised the Legend of Zelda is number ONE but it is sad to see that the newer versions are rated lower. When are we going to see a new Legend of Zelda game that will blow our sicks off?
By Revan on Dec 6, 2009
I agree when ppl say the list is quite off…
Order is awful (you gto X-Wing but didnt mention Tie Fighter?, i love both games, but Tie Figther is WAY superior in every way)
I also see peggle… peggle is like,, tetris…
if they took off the numbers, and re arranged via alphabeticla order, it would quell many, many, many disagreements with the list =P
By CTR on Dec 6, 2009
I am prepared to get skewered for this comment and be called a fanboy, but #39 for Halo? That is way too low. Yes, it is JUST a first-person shooter. But it captured almost everyones attention and was a must have title for Xbox owners. And it did everything right and had one of the most compelling stories at the time. That being said, many titles are ranked too low on this list. Shadow of Colossus being so low is also embarrassing. SoC was one of the most incredible games on PS2. The story was deep and the game play was revolutionary. Cue the fan boy comments.
By JoeShmoe on Dec 7, 2009
SO nice to see that Brawl isn’t up there. There’ve been more and more lists continuing this trend, with only Super Smash Bros. 64 or Melee up (more commonly Melee), and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Lovin’ it.
By steiner on Dec 10, 2009
This list doesn’t even include the best game of all time – Final Fantasy IX. Thus it is fails epically.
By steiner on Dec 10, 2009
Ouch, admittedly my grammar has gone out the window. But still, there are so many bizarre choices in that list that it would take an age for me to go through them all.
By Kane on Dec 10, 2009
Some don’t seem to understand how difficult this list had to have been, and no, it doesn’t look how mine would look. It almost seems as if it was done by someone else. What? It was?
That being said, where’s:
WipeoutXL?
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo?
Burnout: Paradise?
Gran Turismo 2?
Skate?
Mortal Kombat?
-my 2 cents.
