Reggie: Modern Warfare 2 may have trouble maintaining sales while NSMB Wii will sell consistently
November 13th, 2009 Posted in News, Wii, Written by ValayAbout a week ago, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said that New Super Mario Bros. Wii will outsell Modern Warfare 2 on one system by the time the January 2010 NPD sales data report is published. But today, he discussed long-term sales of both games in a recent interview and made a comparison between the two titles. Here’s Fils-Aime’s response when asked if he was surprised by the success of Modern Warfare 2.
“You know, I was not. We know that it’s a high-quality title. We know that it will do exceptionally well. Their challenge is going to be sustaining that. It was so big so fast, what happens next week and the week after? Versus Mario is going to sell for high numbers every day now through, really, for the next couple of years.”

Feeling mighty arrogan-*cough*-I mean confident, aren’t we, Reggie?

hejiru he is arrogant but he is right. mario games have always sold for years and years. but mw2 might do that to.

The reason games like Modern Warfare 2 have trouble maintaining sales in the long term is that they are “front-loaded,” that is, they sell very high the first day, week, or month, and quickly reach the Top 10, but in the next week or month drop more than 50%. Also, buyers of such games want to buy them as soon as possible and not wait latter. This is in contrast to first-party Nintendo games that do not sell very high the first day, week, or month, but continue to sell solidly for months. This may be due to word-of-mouth, and the fact that most buyers are not in any hurry to buy them. I strongly believe that New Super Mario Bros. Wii will outsell not only one version of Modern Warefare 2, but all versions combined, in a matter of a few months, but several months from now.

NSMB ds came out 182 weeks ago and is still pulling 40-50k a week. With numbers like that he is just telling it how it is.

Well, only time will tell what happens to each game. Guess we gotta wait and see.

Ugh, It’s ALL about marketing and sales for Nintendo now (or at least Reggie). Everyone knows that good marketing is essential to a successful company, but Nintendo should know by now that they’re not anywhere near bankrupcy. It’s about the games, right? I hate to admit it, but MW2 obviously has more effort put into it than NSMBWii.

Yeah, but the question is which game is better. A rehash of a game made in 1985 or a rehash of every FPS thrown into one game. Personally, I think they both suck!!!

Thomas N – you really think NSMBW will outsell all versions of MW2 COMBINED??? You’ve gotta be kidding, right? NSMBW will struggle to outsell just one version of the game in lifetime sales, if it does, it will only be the PC version it outsells. By the end of this year MW2 will likely have already sold well over 10 million units – there’s no way NSMBW is gonna catch that.

David, NSMB for DS sold 18.5 million so far, and it only came out 3 years ago. This new one for Wii WILL keeping selling and selling for years to come. It will outsell MW2 in the long run…based on how Nintendo games sell.

Guys:
What was the pricetag on NSMB?
And how much does MW2 cost?
So, on a gross revenue level, NSMB is STILL about 40% behind MW2.
Also, I bet you if NSMB was $60, they would not have sold even 5 million copies.
So don’t get the wrong idea.

@ GamerKT – The DS has a “Slightly” higher install base than the Wii, LOL. So just because a DS game sells 18 million doesn’t mean a Wii game is automatically destined to as well.

I’m sorry, is he talking about the same MW2 whose predecessor still consistently sells very well despite being over two years old?
The thing is that Mario is a nintendo games and MW2 is a 3rd party game. It’s all well and good for the big N selling millions of units of their own product but when all their 3rd party developers and publishers jump ship to machines on which they can sell decent numbers of games they’re going to be in the schtuck!

Reggie is completely right, I can definitely see NSMB Wii outselling MW2. It won’t be immediately, but it will in lifetime sales.
