Reggie not fazed by PS3 rank for September NPD, says Nintendo is pleased with Wii price cut numbers

November 6th, 2009 Posted in News, Wii, Written by Valay

Believe it or not, the PS3 outsold the Wii for the first time since launch in September. This is, of course, based on the September 2009 NPD sales data report. Both Sony and Nintendo applied price cuts during that month. But although Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO of Nintendo of America, is pleased with the Wii price cut numbers thus far, he was quick to point out on the latest episode of GameTrailers TV that the PS3 had a longer period with its drop and therefore “you have to put it in perspective.”

“So far it’s selling really well. We’ve been very pleased with the numbers. We’re really pleased as we get ready for the holiday season…You know, you have to put it in perspective. They had five full weeks of price reduction in their favor, we had the one week. And even with that, the gap was pretty small.”

Oh you people; why can’t you just shut up already… making comments like that! :P
Nintendo still does good in sales; & it doesn’t matter if they try their best to make things more lively overseas or in Japan! ;)
And Reggie is still cool; don’t diss him! :(

@dylantalon. Of course he’s going to spin it, it’s typical PR damage control. Wii’s 2010 numbers will still leave a huge gap between PS360 sales, you’d be a fool though if you thought Wii’s life was flickering away like a silly fad. They were on top for nearly four years, a drop in sales was inevitable.

Don’t worry, some huge third party games should give Wii another boost. And Nintendo could easily release a slimmer, updated Wii like they did with snes, toss in a few new colors for good measure, and voila sales increase.

No kidding. They still did well with only a week of a price cut boost over the competition in September. As usual, the PS3 and 360 price cuts didn’t give either a lasting boost, sales trends already having normalized again with the others behind the Wii. The reality of things is, the HD consoles have failed to draw the interest of the masses – no amount of price cuts will make either competitive against the Wii or popular in the mainstream. All the while, Iwata’s already working on plans to boost Wii sales even more since he’s not too pleased with things in these past couple of years, so we should be seeing some more very interesting things in the future.

Of course, this is also talking to the same crowd that labeled the DS a “fad,” and the same for Pokemon over ten years ago now…

It seems there is decension among the ranks in the Nintendo camp. Just last week Satoru Iwata made a statement about how he thought the Wii was “Failing” and said how displeased he was with the results following the Wii price cut. He placed the blame directly on a lack of AAA software for the Nintendo Wii……..it’s good to see at least someone running the ship has been following what’s going on.

@David Macphail. Iwata’s Japanese, nothing is ever good enough, it needs to be perfect. Wii could’ve out sold PS3 and he still would say he’s disappointed with sales.

Yes but Iwata outranks Reggie Fils – Aime within Nintendo so it’s his views people will pay more attention to.
