Iwata: Game industry lacked hit titles in first half of 2009, caused “worldwide market contraction”

October 30th, 2009 Posted in General Nintendo, News, Written by Valay

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata recently admitted that the “Wii has stalled” and that this is due to a lack of “strong software.” However, Iwata also delivered a keynote at a semi-annual financial results briefing in Japan and made a similar claim, but this time it was about the gaming industry in general. In his keynote, Iwata stated that there were no big hits in the first half of 2009, which caused “worldwide market contraction.”

“So far I have been talking about the market based on the number of units. Now I would like to look at the market in terms of monetary sales volume…We attribute the main reason of worldwide market contraction to the lack of hit titles across the industry in the first half of the year.”

    I thought inFAMOUS, Killzone 2, Flower, and BF 1943 (if it’s in the first half) was pretty good. I bought plenty of games in the first half!

    I would believe that there is a lack of hit titles in the likeness of those found in the first half of 2008. The hit games that sold in the first half of last year sold in the millions, but a few sold more than ten million worldwide and still selling (Mario Kart Wii).

    If the industry is to avoid another contraction next year, it needs to release games that sell as much as the first half of 2008.

    Talking about delusional. Lack of hit titles across the industry? Does he mean on wii? No surprise there then. The fad is ending. I said it before and I’ll say it again, take away the casuals and wii install base would be even smaller than the cubes.

    Did he forget about Killzone 2? Or did he expect Sony to bring out MORE AAA games to make up for Nintendo’s lack of contribution?

    funny thing is, he is pretending nintendo holiday offerings are anything to talk about. Two Christmas seasons in a row now where there is nothing to get excited for on wii, or earlier in the year. Good going!

    Guys,

    He’s talking about Japan.

    “However, Iwata also delivered a keynote at a semi-annual financial results briefing in Japan. In his keynote, Iwata stated that there were no big hits in the first half of 2009, which caused “worldwide market contraction.”

    Hopefully, this clears up the confusion.

    @lol
    Hold on, did you just name yourself “lol?” What a tool. And just because you are not excited doesn’t mean others are not. The sells for NSMBW will surely showcase that. Now go back to your basement “lol” and play some shooters.

    Yeah, you’re right. There was no hit titles this year. That is a bit gloomy.
