Reports: New update destroying Wii consoles
September 30th, 2009 Posted in News, Wii, Written by ValayUpdate: Nintendo has responded to the issues with the update and is offering to repair unmodified consoles for free.
Although initial reports suggested that the latest Wii update automatically only removes traces of the homebrew channel, there seems to be a much larger issue: It’s breaking some consoles.
The main issue lies in the actual update process. A program that allows the Wii to boot properly – boot2 – has also been upgraded but it apparently has a high chance of causing write errors. Because of this, some people are experiencing a frozen download screen when trying to download menu 4.2. The Wii will not respond if it’s frozen, and when you take the plug out…Nothing will happen when you boot it back up. This incident doesn’t seem to be happening to every Wii owner, but it looks like this could be a pretty significant problem nonetheless.

It happened to me!!!!! I have to send it away for repairs now, Luckily the guy on the other end of the phone marked it down as still under warranty(Even though I bought it the day it came out) The only positive out of all this, Is a one year extended warranty starting the day I get it back from Nintendo’s repair shop.
P.S. At first I thought it was just me. I thought it was my internet connection. Hopefully I get some free Nintendo Points out of all this.

How do we know that the reports of the Wii update “bricking” some consoles are legitimate and not created by fear-mongers who use “homebrew”? Anyone can post in the Nintendo tech forums, and the post that warns about “bricking” came from a user with a low post count. How credible is he? Did you provide evidence (through pictures) that his Wii console was “bricked” because of the update? I am quite skeptical on this Internet claim until it is proven.

@ Thomas – A number of people have said that they’re having this issue even though they don’t have the homebrew channel installed. Doesn’t seem to be a one-time incident.

If this happens to machines that previously had the “homebrew channel” installed, then if they had read the warnings on the update, about possibly having a unresponsive machine that might need to be fixed, they should not have updated to the latest update then….

Microsoft- Red Ring of Death
Sony- Yellow Light of Death
Nintendo- System Update of Death
XD, this generation seriously has the worst made consoles (stability wise). I mean, everyones Xboxs around me are breaking down, yet I still have a working N64 in my bedroom… heck, other than having to blow games 50 times before playing them, my NES still works (even though its not hooked up)

I’ve never used HomeBrew Channel, I’m one hundred percent legitimate. And I still got screwed. My brother had no problems updating his Nintendo Wii(And he is one hundred percent legitimate too) And we live in the same house…So I don’t know, Either way it’s not cool.

CaptainOlimar:
Whether your console was under warranty at the time the fault occurred is irrelevant. As the problem with your console appears to have been caused by Nintendo’s negligence in releasing code that clearly hasn’t been tested properly then they are liable to you for any damage caused to your property.
They are repairing consoles that have experienced this problem out of warranty for the simple fact that if they didn’t the people affected could take them to court for damages.

I also noticed that this update took A LOT longer to download than usual. I had no thought or intention of my Wii possibly crashing (because I didn’t know about the problem at the time), but I did think the long update was very strange, considering I also have very fast connections.

@ Ride – I decided to update today and I agree with you. Took such a long time for me as well.
