Wii video service will be “different,” could extend to DS

April 7th, 2009 Posted in DS, News, Wii, Written by Valay

It was announced a few months ago that the Wii would soon be receiving a video service from the big N. Now Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has expressed possible interest in extending the service to the DS and has reaffirmed that it may arrive in overseas territories.

“If the Wii and the DS are connected, it should be possible to download video through the Wii and take it with you on the DS…When the service begins, you’ll see how we’re going to do it differently in a Nintendo-like way. There are a lot of on-demand video services, so there’s no reason to do the same thing, so we’re going to do something different. We’ll start the service in Japan, and if it does well, we’d like to take it overseas. [Nintendo wants to make the Wii] something that people will turn on even if they don’t have a purpose in mind. We’re not there yet though, and there are a lot of things we have to do to achieve that.”

Thanks to Jake for the news tip.

This is beyond incredible. I’d be more than happy to take download videos from the Wii to my DSi. I can already see myself making good use of this.

Perhaps Nintendo will feature weekly Animal Crossing cartoons and miniature movies in which Wario strumps through various islands hunting gold coins that would be based off of WarioLand: The Shake Dimension as it is known in the UK.

My guess is the first two DS models will use the video service similar to the DS download station(if you turn the system off, the download disappears). The DSi, however, will be able to save it with its built in memory and SD card slot.
