MMO Pokemon game not happening for now

March 23rd, 2009 Posted in News, Wii, Written by Valay

Following up on the story regarding a full-fledged Pokemon title on the Wii, it also looks like a MMO entry in the series can be ruled out for now as well. Pokemon Platinum game director Junichi Masuda reiterated the importance of “real-world communication” and how players are unable to “see each other online.”

“At this point, we’re not thinking of going in that direction [MMO]. Trading is a core concept of Pokémon. So when you’re trading, you meet with a friend and decide which one you want and which one they want. I would like to emphasize real-world communication. You don’t see each other online.”

Shame, a Pokemon MMO would be great.

Very dissapointing news :( , they just don’t see the potential, heck if you want people 2 see each other make the game come with a camera to hook up to the Wii, trading and chatting can be done online, so its really a wasted opportunity !

Really weak logic I think. I have never found the trading to be a strong element at all, the only thing I wanted to trade for was mystery gift and that isn’t even the Pokemon.
If the wanted to emphasize the concept of interaction then online would do it better. Some (Read as: MANY ) people don’t live in populated areas or have friends that like Pokemon.
MMO eliminates those limitations where almost anyone regardless of location could play together.

It also adds a grander sense of community, where if they pulled it off properly you could have an ever expanding world where people choose their home town and region. Higher level trainers could ‘discover’ new Pokemon rather then have a professor fill them in on what they missed between games.

Just the thought of changing the tired old battle system to a more real time 3d system where you could control the Pokemon first hand no less then excites me.

Though there is very very slim chances any developer could match my ludicrous and mislead expectations let alone the full potential of Pokemon as an mmo.
